How are summer associates evaluated?
Summer associates are provided feedback on assignments they undertake throughout the summer. At the end of the summer associate program, all attorneys within the firm are asked to provide written feedback on any summer associate with whom they worked, and these evaluations are reviewed by the firm's Recruiting Committee, who make the final hiring decisions.
How often do you hire from the summer program?
The summer associate program is Preti Flaherty's primary hiring tool for new associates. The summer program gives both the participants and us the best opportunity to learn about each other. Therefore, it is Preti Flaherty's goal to offer positions to as many of its summer associates as possible.

Do you hire first year law students?
The Beliveau-McCarthy Fellowship Program is open to first-year students at the University of Maine School of law exclusively, and offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in several major aspects of practicing in a large Maine-based law firm. It was created in honor of two of Preti Flaherty's most distinguished alumni of the University of Maine School of Law: Albert Beliveau and Matthew McCarthy. The one available summer position is full-time (40 hrs/week) and includes a weekly stipend. All first-year students are welcome to apply, but only candidates with outstanding credentials will be seriously considered.
What types of projects are summer associates asked to work on?
Summer associates at Preti Flaherty have the opportunity to work on assignments from all of our various practice groups. Research, writing and legal analysis are central to our Summer Associate Program. Our summer associates work on actual matters for real clients. In addition, summer associates are frequently given the opportunity to attend client meetings, court appearances, regulatory hearings, transactional closings and legislative proceedings.
Will I be provided a mentor?
Yes. Each summer associate is assigned an individual mentor for the summer who is typically a mid-level associate in the firm. There is also a partner who is in charge of the entire summer associate program who serves as a resource to all summer associates. Summer associates typically work with many different attorneys throughout the 10-week program and are encouraged to develop those relationships as well.
